Strategy & Operations Expert

Dr Nia D Thomas

Interim CEO and senior leader for organisations navigating change, transition, and growth in the charitable and public sector.

Values-led, people-centred leadership that combines strategic vision with operational discipline, and the self-awareness to know the difference between the two.

My Experience

I’m a senior leader who steps into organisations at critical moments, bringing strategic clarity, operational grip, and the human-centred approach that makes change happen.

With over 25 years of leadership across the NHS, civil government, local government, and the charitable sector, I have led organisations through transitions that matter: programme closures, cultural rebuilding, financial stabilisation, service redesign, and leadership development during uncertainty.

My most recent role was Interim CEO at Maggs Day Centre, a homelessness charity in Worcestershire, where I led the organisation through a period of significant operational and governance change. Before that, I directed A Better Start Southend, a £45m National Lottery-funded early childhood programme, guiding it to a purposeful and well-managed close. I have also held senior operational roles at Baby Lifeline and Great Ormond Street Hospital, and worked across civil service and local government settings, including Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Department of Health and Social Care.

My doctoral research focused on self-awareness and leader effectiveness, and it shapes everything I do. I help organisations think more clearly about their strategy, their culture, and themselves.

HOW I CAN HELP YOU

Strategy and Organisational Leadership

I provide interim leadership at CEO, COO, Director, and Programme Lead level, working with boards and senior teams to develop strategy, strengthen governance, and build operating models designed for resilience and impact. I advise on risk and assurance, and I translate ambitious strategy into practical, measurable delivery. I am equally comfortable setting direction from scratch and inheriting complexity mid-stride.

Operational Delivery and Improvement

I specialise in the gap between strategy and results. I help organisations embed performance and accountability frameworks, streamline delivery systems, and lead restructuring with clarity and empathy. I am experienced at stabilising operations during leadership transitions and building the management infrastructure that enables teams to perform at their best.

Public Service and Charity Transformation

The majority of my career has been spent improving systems and services in public and charitable sector environments. I have designed and evaluated policy implementation and service models, built integrated systems across government and voluntary sector boundaries, and led cross-sector collaboration to deliver community outcomes. I understand how the voluntary sector actually works: its funding pressures, its governance structures, its relationships with commissioners and funders. I bring both challenge and practical support.

Finance and Sustainability

I strengthen financial governance at board and operational level, including budget management, financial reporting, and team upskilling. I bring experience of major grant programmes, VCSE funding landscapes, and social enterprise planning. I provide honest, constructive challenge to help organisations think clearly about financial sustainability and long-term viability.

Impact, Data and Governance

I lead the design of impact measurement and evaluation frameworks, ensuring that data is used meaningfully to inform decisions and demonstrate value to funders, commissioners, and communities. I have led digital transformation and data governance initiatives, and I understand the governance obligations, including safeguarding, data protection, and regulatory compliance, that sit at the heart of well-run charitable organisations.

People, Culture and Organisational Development

I provide interim leadership through transition with a particular focus on people, culture, and organisational development. I have designed and delivered workforce wellbeing frameworks, inclusive leadership programmes, and management development initiatives. I coach senior teams to lead with inclusion and self-awareness, and I design systems and processes around how people actually work, ensuring that structures enable rather than obstruct performance. My qualifications include a Chartered Manager designation (2023-25)  and PRINCE2.
