As the year draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the changes we’ve been through.
We’ve been through fear, loss and sadness. We’ve been agile, we’ve flexed and become virtual. We’ve had division, incredulity and unacceptance alongside kindness, compassion and neighbourliness.
If I had to describe the world of work in 2020 in 3 words, I’d say:
- ADAPTABLE: we’ve worked in different ways, in different places and in different jobs. We’ve thought differently and innovatively about how we do what we do and come up with novel ideas to keep us socially distanced yet professionally together.
- PROGRESSIVE: we’ve become zoom experts over night and realised that distance no longer matters. The digital revolution has been hastened and it’s been backed up by ICT teams that have upgraded creaking systems, taking the office into our homes and hundreds of colleagues into our spare bedrooms.
- CARING: we’ve taken the responsibility of staff wellbeing very seriously and we’ve refocused our attention on pastoral care. We’ve acknowledged the impact that emotional and mental health has on people and their ability to work. We’ve worked in scary times, we’ve worked alone, we’ve worked in busy homes and it’s taken it’s toll.
